The DK20: Digital Die
The DK20 (Digital Kitchen-20) is a prototype for a digital 20-sided die. During one of our work sponsored hackathons, I devised, 3D modeled and built the DK20 as a fun way to challenge my fabrication abilities, spatial reasoning and tech skills, while appealing to my geeky side. Equiped with an accelerometer, arduino UNO and X-Bee, (and with a little programing help from my hacker-in-cahoots cohort, Ben Chaykin), the die records every roll and sends the data to your connected device. The final result was not perfectly balanced as a die should be (nor would it likely hold up for an entire D&D campaign 😅) but it worked! More importantly, the DK20 was educational and an absolute blast to make.
